First Impression:
This is my first cigar form the Alexandra collection. 5 years aged with a perfect dark and oily wrapper. From the looks of things I am in for an very tasty and amazing smoke session. review can be found below.
Pre-Smoke Ritual:
I made my cut and took a long cold draw. I was able to get immediate flavors of chocolate and nutmeg. Who doesn't love that? I gave it a good even toast in preparation to take my first draw.
Lighting, Draw, and Burn:
As with every El Septimo cigar lighting is very easy. No issues what so ever. I think that is due to the slow meticulous toast prior to lighting. The draw was on the looser side of perfect but seemed to tighten up into the second third. The burn was a middle speed and very even.
Flavor:
The first third kept true to the flavors found in the cold draw. Chocolate and nutmeg flavored smoke filled my mouth. There was also a sweetness that was more than a note, but not in the front line. It held a nice middle position. The second third brought a strong flavor of dark roast coffee. The sweetness now became a note. The chocolate an nutmeg stayed in the front lines. The final third had a few flavor swaps. The chocolate and coffee flavor were in the front. The sweetness and nutmeg fell even as solid notes. There was zero bitterness down to the nub.
My Preference:
I allowed this cigar one week in the humidor. I really just did not want to wait anymore. I used the punch that is part of the El Septimo duel jet butane lighter. I used the same lighter as my source of fire as well.
Final Thoughts:
This was a great tasting cigar. All the flavors mixed well in and out of their transitions. The nutmeg was very good and in your face to start. There was nothing about this cigar that I did not enjoy. It also left a very dull sweetness in your mouth after smoking. The mix of spice, chocolate, and coffee also lingered for a while after I was done smoking. I would definitely recommend this cigar especially as an after dinner stick.
