Review: Ashton ESG (Estate Sun Grown)

The Ashton ESG or Estate Sun Grown is one of legend. This cigar provides an experience that can only come out of the Dominican Republic. A unique blend by La Casa de Fuente, done by Carlito Fuente himself, this Dominican gem will engage all of your senses and take you on a fantastic journey. You wouldn't expect anything less from tobaccos grown in the famous Chateau Fuente, home of Opus X, God of Fire, and Anejo. Like the Opus X, these are limited runs and well worth the patience and price.

First Impression:

Taking this cigar out of the box, I noticed something odd. The cellophane was slightly thicker than usual but good quality. Removing the cellophane, I noticed an oily, creamy, and smooth wrapper with little to no defects. The wrapper and foot present with an aroma of leather and hay.

Pre-Smoke Ritual:

I have been allowing my cigars to sit in an environment where I will be smoking for about 30 minutes to an hour. I've given the cigar a chance to acclimate itself and limits splitting and being overly humidified.

Lighting, Draw, and Burn:

For this cigar, I did not perform the usual pre-light draw. I wanted to experience the subtle changes as I drew fire into the foot. No, I did not toast the foot either. Over the years, I have noticed that not toasting the foot allows one to experience flavors' growth. This is not to say you should never toast the foot of your cigar, but instead, try both ways and see what suits you.

Flavors:

Leather, Cedar, Pepper/Citrus, Hay, and Deep Earth

My Preference:

1 week rest in the humidor. Cut made with a Guillotine. Source of fire was Cedar Spills.

Final Thoughts:

This is not your everyday cigar. This is meant to be enjoyed for that special occasion, on

vacation, or when you need to relax after a rough day. The smooth tobaccos and sweet aroma will put anyone at ease and relaxed. If you can find them, it's worth picking up a stick!!
